celer's Ord Bot

Hi,

I'm in the process of building an Ord Bot. I wanted to give a bit of credit to JeremyBP for answering my initial set of questions, which helped set me upon this path.

So I've ordered the following items

Ord Bot
* Ord Bot Hadron kit from http://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/3d-printer/3d-printer-mechanical-platform-no-controller
* Azteeq X3 from http://www.panucatt.com/Azteeg_X3_reprap_3d_printer_controller_p/ax33dp.htm
* Helios heated bed from http://www.panucatt.com/product_p/hbp200.htm
* QU-BD Extruder from http://store.qu-bd.com/product.php?id_product=11
* Power supply from http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HARHN8/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00

Supplies & Misc
* Wire: 12AWG, 22AWG, and 20AWG Hookup wire from RadioShack, and extra 20AWG wire rolls in different colors from Amazon in 100ft (i.e. http://www.amazon.com/UL1015-Commercial-Copper-Bright-Diameter/dp/B003HGHQ74/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1352483425&sr=8-3&keywords=blue+20awg
* Connectors listed here: http://www.buildlog.net/wiki/doku.php?id=ord:wiring from http://www.digikey.com
* Spring from McMaster p/n 9664K17 for wiring and 9657K155 for bed platform
* Crimpers from here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00079LN1Y/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00 (I'm tired of needle nose pliers for crimping things ... )

Ord Bot Kit prior to assembly

I got the kit in this week and I'm really impressed with it. All the parts and construction were well thought out and well made.

So I finished building my ord bot!

Here are some various highlights from the build.

First I ended up having to get another set of crimpers to do the microfit and molex connectors, I got these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007JLN93S/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00 for 23$ from Amazon which worked great!

I also opted for external wiring of the ord bot:

The used a Helios heated bed from Panucatt devices. One of the things that I was caught off guard by were the fibers in the insulation in the heated bed - I should have worn a resperator when working with it. I ended up covering it with kapton tape to prevent it from shedding fibers.

And finally the first print:

So here is what I learned:

* Having a set of these really helped a lot: http://www.amazon.com/Irwin-Industrial- ... +strippers
* I was able to remove the wobble from the Z axis by flipping the threaded rods, and then loosing the the stepper motor mounts and threading the rods into the couplings, thereby centering the stepper motors, and finally tightening up the rollers on the makerslide.
* The QU-BD extruder is challenging at best, it doesn't seem to work for long at all, and I'm not sure it is possible to have it work in it's stock form - I believe either the gear or the stepper motor is to blame. It seems to bind up and stops printing on a regular basis
* The Z axises didn't work initially it would bind up all the time, I ended up having to grease the threaded rods and run them up and down a few times to have it work
* The first print was of pretty good quality and was going great until the QU-BD extruder stopped working
* The directions provided for the Ord Bot, Azteeg X3, QU-BD extruder and Heated bed where excellent - I really didn't need any other resources.

Here are some more initial prints - I think the quality would be much better if the QU-BD extruder would work for more then a few minutes. Everytime the extruder would freeze up I could hear the stepper motor skip - immediately I'd pause the print, reverse out the filament, and remove the stripped filament, and re-feed it back into the extruder.

I tried everything I could think of to get the extruder to work with no luck :( I'm gonna try printing out some of the various bearing base extruders on thingiverse.
