Question to Get Started

Postby DoubleDeez » Sun Jan 19, 2014 9:18 pm

So I've read the build instructions and looked over the BOMs and I've decided I want to build a 2.x Laser Cutter.

Am I correct in saying that all the items needed are found on this BOM: http://www.buildlog.net/cnc_laser/erp/b ... tNo=D30025 ?

Is there anything not on that BOM that is also needed?

My understanding is that buildlog.net no longer sells the items needed, I do have access to a WaterJet cutter, 3D Printer, laser cutter, and PCB mill, are DXFs/STLs for the buildlog items available?

I found laser tubes (~200$) & laser power supplies (~130$) on ebay from china, has anyone had any luck using these?

I haven't been able to find a source for 560mm MakerSlide, does anyone have a good link for this? I live in Canada.

For these parts: http://www.buildlog.net/documents/c51002_rev_4.pdf http://www.buildlog.net/documents/c51001_rev_6.pdf
What units are the 1/2 and 1/4 Thk in?
Do they have STLs available to be 3D printed?

Let me take a crack at these...

1) BOM. Yes, that's it. I've also found it helpful to review/cross-reference http://0x0000ff.com/laser/, which lists more of the lasery bits you'll need.

2) I believe Bart still makes parts kits available. Check the history of this forum to see about kit availability.

3) eBay lasers. Check the forum history.

4) MakerSlide: http://www.inventables.com/ -- buy 1m, cut to length. Carefully.

5) Units. I believe inches.

It looks like we are on our own now to fabricate the parts to build the 2.X laser. There are pdf drawings and dfx. Files for nearly all the parts that need to be fabricated.
Some of the sources listed in the BOM may not be in business any more - for example Econobelts. Maybe SDP/SI will make up the 64" loop MXL belt. I have found another source however that should be able to custom make up that size.
Someone with a Trumpf press should be able to make the outer panels easily. I live not far from a weld shop that has one - hopefully it wouldn't cost too much for a single set.

For the equivalent of Makerslide, check out OpenBuilds.com. They are having extruded 20/20 sizes made up and they also have the Vee groove wheels. I will be getting the rail from them. The rest of the fram parts will be from 80/20's ebay store.

The parts you have attached on the bottom of your post could be CNC milled too.

FWIW, Inventables appears to carry the MXL belts as well. And, of course, the MakerSlide.

I ordered everything I could from eBay, Misumi, McMaster-Carr, LightObject, and OpenBuilds. Just waiting on the OpenBuilds to arrive (should be tomorrow). I've built the frame so far, I'll probably be re-designing things as I go so I can make use of what I have available.
