Anyone out there still in the process of the initial 2.x laser build?

I am -- nearing the end, about to install tube and optics.

I'm working on a build too. I've increased the footprint a bit and I'm finishing up my frame/skins. I have everything ready to go aside from control and laser tube. Still debating what controller to use. My skins are slowing me down currently because I am marking, cutting, and drilling them by hand.

Working on expanding mine to use a 80w tube.

I'm still building as well. I'm going with the stock 2.X design, although I kinda wish I had enlarged it a bit. Oh well.

I've got the frame and gantry completely built. I've gathered all the parts except for a few random odds and ends.

On my TODO list:
- Connect the belts and test the mechanics with the controller
- Mirror mounts from LightObject don't fit the parts in the kit I bought. Gotta figure that out.
- The cable carrier I bought doesn't move freely enough. Need to buy a nicer one.
- Test the laser and the rest of the electronics.
- Wire up the electronics.
- Figure out how to mount all the electronics in the frame.
- Build/find a bench to put this on in my garage

I am accumulating parts. Some are a little difficult to acquire at this point. The one that will be most difficult at this point is the sheeting. I might be able to pick up a 4x8 sheet from the original source, but will have to get it cut up myself.

I cut my own panels with a circular saw mostly, used a router/jig to cut vent slots. A decent sign supply shop should be able to cut it as well, but what's the fun in that.

I got some aluminum plate and cut mine with a plasma cutter. A bit heavier than what everyone else probably has, but it sure makes the whole thing solid as can be. I'm trying to finish up the vents and decide my electronics before I cut and drill all the panel areas. I think once I get that all done I'm going to try and find a local place to powder coat them.

Hi Guys

I am just starting my build. Where did you get your kits parts from. The website for the kits seems to be down for maintenance all the time?!

Any help gratefully received. Cheers.

James

I just started building myself and i see that just like 3d printer projects, if its comes down to making sourcing easier, i think that can be a really big impact on making this project go forward.

-Sourcing for 3D Printable parts is becoming easier and Easier
-Sourcing for GT2 Pulleys and Belts is becoming easier
-Alternative electronics like the smoothieboard are now available. Electronics that still don't use a parallel port.

As opposed to making a laser cutter that is more replicatable, if it was just easier to source, i think more people would build it
knowing they can do other CNC like hobbies in one particular build area.

3.X Design?
