Thanks!

The project is similar in goal to Makerslide, I was trying to make a way that does the linear motion cheaper and easier.

Bart, any updates / BOM on earlier design concept?

Hi All,

I really liked the original makerslide router idea and was a bit disappointed to see that this thread died out. I decided to build my router using misumi 4080 extrusion, cold rolled flat bar and routerparts carriage for linear motion.
I designed and printed all the plastic parts (motor mounts, couplers, idlers...) on my reprap.
For electronics I am using sanguinololu board, which is designed for 3d printers, but it works well on this setup with 24V power supply.
I am using Marlin firmware (also designed for 3d printers) that I hacked to remove things like temperature control and change E axis for extruder into another X axis since I am using two motors for X and they are both hooked to a separate driver.

Here are few pictures and a video of it cutting some mdf. Machine can move much faster then in that video, but I need to do some testing with rotozip to see how much abuse it can take before something breaks. It is still very much work in progress. Comments are welcome :)

Way cool!

Wow thats very cool, congrats! i'd love to know more about it.
it looks like some brackets are printed ?
have you tried routing or machining any soft metals yet?

Congrats on an a awesome build! 8-)

I just got a Shapeoko (makerslide-based) and plan to try routing aluminum plate and copper bar with it - not sure its rigid enough, but we'll see - it might need substantial reinforcements for that...

thanks frob! I haven't tried routing any soft materials yet. I am planning on doing that when I get a new router and end mills.
Extrusion is connected to a welded table (my first welding project) that has holes in it, so I did not print any brackets.
Here is the picture of the table.

Nice!
So those supports for the stepper motors and leadscrew bearings - what are they made of ?
How much did it cost in raw materials all together ?

That's a great welding job especially considering its your first :)

Cheers

stepper motor mounts and all other plastic parts are printed. I used gray PLA, so it almost looks like its metal.

Here is the list of materials and cost:

extrusion and tslot nuts (misumi): $121
bolts (mcmaster): $24
acme rods (mcmaster): $126
metal for table (craft center): around $50
stepper motors (phidgets): $101
sanguinololu board (brook printrbot): $120
bearings (vxb): $22
linear carriages (cncrouterparts): $153
acme nuts (dumpstercnc): $68
cold rolled flat bar (onlinemetals): $93

I think thats all. Maybe add another $50 for mdf, paint, plastic etc...

which thrust bearings did you go with? Are your STL files available anywhere? Thanks, --Bill

Bill, I did not use thrust bearings for Z axis. I used radial ball bearings. I know I should probably change that in future.
I am planning on posting STL files to thingiverse, after I move everything to openscad (and learn how to use openscad). If you want to experiment I can send you existing stl's.

Cheers,
Mick

I'm not in any rush. Not sure what I want to do!
