Laser cutting a SMT solder paste stencil?

Postby Nogginboink » Thu Jun 16, 2011 3:43 pm

Can a DIY laser cutter be used to create a stencil for applying solder paste for an SMT circuit board? What material would be used for this?

I have seen a service online that laser cuts SMT stencils from Kapton. I have yet to try it, but I believe it can be cut with a CO2 laser. I have some Kapton tape at home that I'll have to try soon and post the results.

I've seen it done with raster (not vector) engraving on a mylar sheet. Should be no reason that "DIY" is the limiting factor.
