Z fine-adjustment without tools

Postby flurin » Thu May 24, 2012 8:52 pm

One small suggestion for the z-adjustment.
I use a M5 screw (one quarter-turn corresponds to 0.2 mm).

Nice!
I use the original set screw in a vertical position.

I cut off the roller from the end of the micro-switch lever because it was interfering with the screw.
Z axis adjustment is much easier now but not as easy as it would be with a thumb screw.

why not print a thumbscrew cover/cap for a standard bolt, something like this: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:11848?

@flurin
@dzach

I Like both these approaches;

I see that flurin moved the switch over to the left a bit and uses more plastic, but the blue screw holder looks great.

dzach's is smaller, and looks like adding any type of knob would be more difficult and require a very small Knob.
Perhaps change out the screw that goes into the T-Slot to a counter sink type (and counter sink the plastic of course),
that would allow a bigger diameter Knob.

any .stl files available for these, looks like something I might try.

@RSWeaverAz

You are right, I drilled a third hole in order to move the switch to the left. This way you have enough space for your fingers.

The stls for the z-endstop and srewcap are attached.

I went for minimum changes, only one extra M4 screw is needed for the mod. But you'll need an allen key for the adjustment.

@dzach

Your endstop is similar to mine first one and is a quick solution that works fine.

Funny thing, I have a second design that uses a thumb screw :D but it's more involved and I haven't printed it yet.
If you come to think of it, the bot's design itself is what creates the (similar) solutions.
Or, as they say, the solution lies within the problem.

I printed my 2nd design too, the one with the set screw. Using a Z-axis stop at the original position doesn't leave space for a thumb screw so the thumb screw has to be moved to a position further away from the makerslide extrusion. The setscrew however has to remain in line with the limit switch.

Here are the plastic parts:
z-stop1.png

and a photo with most of the parts (a 4mm washer is missing):
2012-05-25-225109.jpg
The screws are M4. The one with the off center hole was a drilling exersize for my CuHotE extruder; any M4 screw will do, I needed a 4mm one without a head and used what I had available.

The thing assembled:
2012-05-25-225549.jpg

and installed:

Instructions:

There are 4 holes in the plastic part, 2 are 3.5mm and the rest are 4mm. Tap the 3.5mm ones with an M4 tap (or use the M4 screws for this).
Install it with an M4 socket head screw and a T slot nut.

One full turn of the thumb screw translates to 0.7mm on the Z-axis.

The thumb screw is this thing:
