I prefer the goggle type because they fit over the top of my ordinary spectacles. Mine came from Lumenis and are primarily intended for YAG 1064 nm but are still rated OD 5 at 10600 nm - but as Bart has said almost anything will do for the CO2 wavelength.
One point, which I think was mentioned elsewhere, is that these goggles give no protection against the bright visible spot produced on the surface of the work. Unless you wear welders goggles you are likely to get 'arc-eye' from staring at the spot too long.

They have all kinds of shields for different wavelengths.
Shipping was very quick.
I presently have 3 sets, one for myself and 2 for any quests that are interested in viewing the laser working. Better be proactive than reactive when it come to safety. You never know when something might go wrong.

I just got them in the mail today and they came with a nice hard case, a cleaning cloth, and a string so you they can hang around the neck. They are fit overs and fit my glasses fairly well.
Specs:
10,600nm - OD 7+
9000-11,000nm - OD 5+
130-360nm OD 9+
They are made specifically to cover all the wavelengths for co2 lasers.
Price ins't too bad either $37.50 then I paid around $10 for shipping. They also have a really easy paypal checkout.

prescription glasses enough for testing?
Posted: Tue Jul 12, 2011 8:21 pmI've got prescription glasses that are polycarbonate with an antiglare coating. Is this sufficient for just testing electrical connections <.5sec firings until my laser glasses show up?

Posted: Tue Jul 12, 2011 8:47 pmAlmost everything is opaque to 10.6um. If it's not safe then it's not safe for firing of any duration. The fastest I could push the TEST button at the lowest setting that would power the laser would light a piece of plywood on fire instantly (the flame goes right back out when you stop firing). I actually seemed to get lower power from pulsing TL, but even then I would not mess with it without safety glasses.
