Molybdenum Mirrors: Damaged? -SOLVED

Postby wildseyed » Tue Jan 31, 2012 9:04 pm

I should have followed up right away, but got busy. It turns out that Molybdenum Mirrors do have a protective coating placed on them. Mild dish washing detergent and warm water cleans it off.

Hello everyone.

My kit parts started coming in today, and when I unpacked the molybdenum mirrors, I noticed that they all appear to have either some kind of residue, corrosion, or scratches on the mirror side. Can anyone make sense of this? Is it a protective coating? Do I need to return them?

Thanks.

I doubt you will find many people here that have moly mirrors. Most here are gold coated or the newer DIY hard drive mirrors. Moly is a very good metal for CO2 mirrors and is usually only used in very high power systems. I don't think it should have any coating, so perhaps they have put on a protective coating that you are supposed to clean off with alcohol. I would contact the vendor and ask them. If it has scratches, they would be very difficult to polish out by hand unless you have the right polishing gear.
