KR01 - Laser 40 Watt

Postby indian22 » Tue Sep 06, 2011 2:33 pm

Hi to all,
i have just finished the project for my 40 watt laser inspired from 2.x laser.
I'm from italy, here i have some problem to buy alluminium profile from Misumi Europe becouse doesn't accept single orders.
For this reason i start to project an economic laser (wooden structure + pla parts (made with Mendel extruder)+ alluminium rails).

I attach the assembly drawing of the laser.

Thanks

Francesco

That looks interesting. I look forward to seeing more details. Are all the outside panels laser cut? What material in thickness is it?

Yes, all panels are made of wood 6 mm thick laser-cut.
The next week I should cut all the panels, I will be posting pictures soon.

bye

Please keep us update on your progress. I have also been thinking of doing a laser out of 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) Baltic birch when I start mine but not sure if it would work or not.

One concern I have of this style of design is the lack of easy access to the inside. I tinker with my machine a lot and being able to pull off a panel quickly is very handy. Sometimes things are just out of reach or facing the wrong way. A lot of small work piece cutouts like hole centers often drop out and under the table. It seems like one a month I need to get under the table and clean up. I go months with the electronics side open.

Think about everything that could go wrong. Can you get the tube in and out. Can you tension the Z axis with the table in?

I see there is a hatch on the side. That will help.

Of course have an aluminum frame with removable panels is a great solution, but i was looking for a cheaper solution that would follow the philosophy "build a laser with the laser" .. (the pieces of wood with a laser, plastic pieces with Mendel ).
I have provided openings for easy installation and cleaning .. but only when the machine will be built i will understand better if I reasoned well!!
I already have all the parts for my laser (laser tube, plastic parts, bearings...) and the next week the wood parts will be ready.

hy...some updates..i start to assembly the structure!!
It is very simple..there are a lot of screw but at the end the structure become very compact.
I hope to resume work soon.

Hi Francesco,

I was wondering have you made any progress on your build lately?
I'm curious how the wood was holding up against the vibrations the moving axis will cause.

If your results are promising I might follow a similar route for my next machine.

Thank you,
Frank
