Using Aluminum Angle or Square Tubing

Postby wmgeorge » Thu Feb 27, 2014 5:28 pm

Has anyone built the frame using aluminum either angle or square tubing?
The angle could be pop riveted together and might be the easy way to go. I also have a accurate metal cutting band saw, small milling machine and a spool gun equipped MIG welder that can do aluminum.

Anyone else or is the extruded aluminum really the easier, cheaper, better way to go? Suggestions welcome.

If you can take advantage of the current Misumi promo where you get $150 free, building out of extrusion is probably the cheapest option right now.

I think if you want to use the 2.x design, making it out of angle and welding everything might actually make it harder to build. If you are going with your own design, you can obviously change it to whatever fabrication methods work best for you.

So ball park what does it cost to get the Misumi materials for the project? I just thought by the time you add in all the connectors, nuts and bolts it would be pretty expensive. Don't mine spending money, just want It done right.

I have the Misumi stuff ordered and extra so I can expand or re-design as needed. Using the angle brackets vs welding as it gives me options to remove and re-configure as needed. I still might do some MIG welding but only if needed to make it more solid.
