How big does a filter need to be?

I'm starting to work out plans for a build and one thing I've decided I need is a filter, as I live in a dense neighborhood. If I could get it to the point that I could exhaust inside that would be even better, at least during the winter months, but it's not an absolute necessity.

I've looked at some links showing filtration systems using activated carbon and HEPA filters built in trash cans. What I am wondering about is how large, volumetrically speaking, a filter needs to be. Because space is at a premium, I am kicking around the idea of building a small-footprint cutter that is more tall than wide, by orienting the laser tube vertically rather than horizontally. Assuming that the whole enclosure is roughly 4' high and 18" square, and the cutter and electronics take up the top 18" of that, it struck me that I would have a decent amount of space left below, and I was wondering whether I might be able to squeeze a filtration module in there.
