I think the point is that it makes the air pump itself quieter, but I'm not sure.

I tried a 'soda' bottle tonight and the sound remains the same. As long as I have a load on the pump, it doesn't rattle anyway (I have one of the hailea 55 lpm pumps). Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of permanently wiring up my power tray so can't see the effects on cutting (if any ;) )

I'm getting the feeling that it might just be there to keep the elephants away :D
