hacking a server power supply for a laser

Postby AnthongRedbeard » Thu Dec 06, 2012 8:24 pm

I'm doing a 2.x 40w build.

I have access to a bunch of these:

my question is if I can use something like this for a power supply? if not what is missing?

I'm not all that surprised if I can't use a couple of 750watt poer supplies from a server but I'd be interested to know what features to look for in ones that I can, or if laser power supplies are something completely unique.

thanks,

You can get 3.3V and 5V at a hundred amps, but that's not very useful for anything. You get 12V that can feed a DSP, but even that is overkill. I wouldn't waste time with that.

An ideal system has 12V or 24V to feed the DSP and run a water pump and cooling fan. You will get the 5V for limit switches and such from the DSP. If you want really fast rastering, you want stepper drivers that can take 60-80V on the primary input, and you give it to them through a simple transformer with full bridge rectifier. You will only need about 1 amp service at 50-60V.

Thanks a lot for the detailed response. I'm sure you're right and I'll follow your advice and buy one.
