If the Prize was based on CNC Router Cost?

Postby stonycraft » Thu Feb 28, 2013 5:37 pm

If someone (hyperthetical) were putting up a prize for the 'absolute' minimum build cost for a CNC Router (Software, Sliders, Motors, Cutter, Bits) that can cut on a maximum base size 300x400 (12"x16") and board max 6mm (1/4"); what do you think it could be got down to?. I think for many people its a non starter unless they are guided along such a cost path. I am thinking more a ROI than a Hobby factor...
Thoughts?

The basic ShapeOko is a good place to start.

I built my own cnc router for less than $900.00. That included all software (vectric 2d, and Mach 3). All motors (nema 23), power supply, spindle (proxxon, brushless), Stepper drivers. The useable size for cutting is 11W" x 24L" x 2" of Z movement. I have had it for 2 years. Parts for my present CNC router were made from the first one I built. It is not for heavy use, mainly hobby use. I am presently getting up enough courage to cut out the gantry ends using this unit. We will see how it goes.

The basic eshapeoko kit seems to be of comparable cost to the shapeoko kit.
But it ships from UK, so if you are in Europe maybe it saves you some money (I don't really know).

The $225 shapeoko kit does not include everything you need, but they have a $600 kit that does.
If you are on a tight budget you can beat the $600 by sourcing the additional parts yourself.
I think you need a power supply, dremel tool, endmills, 3 steppers, and a stepper controller.
You could get this stuff for $250 or maybe less if you are real careful. So a total of $475.

But you are not done once the machine is going. You will find all sorts of places to spend money on materials or upgrades.
Best not to keep track :-)

Roberlin,
If I could build for that $475 dollar cost I think I would jump in with both feet right now.
It would be $300 for the eshapeoko in UK; so that leaves us with $175 (115 pounds) to find the rest UK.
I would imagine having to use UK (here) otherwise would blow budget on shipping.
Thoughts?
ps.. Just out of interest do you know what a basic shapeoko kit would cost to ship from USA to mainland Europe?

Looks likes its no more expensive than the eshapeoko even when being shipped a further distance.
