This is the project I did for ORD Camp. This is a cheap, ridged, scalable and simple 3D printer mechatronic platform using MakerSlide. It was a fun project that only took about 5-6 hours from inspiration to implementation.

Very impressive I just might have to add this to the list of cool things to build. I was looking at building a makerbot but didn't want to buy a whole kit and wanted to design one. Just throw in one of their fancy extruders and a heated build platform and your ready to go.

What software packages exist for open source 3d printing?

There are several excellent packages available, one of the better ones that I highly recommend is PrintRun (https://github.com/kliment/Printrun).
