I would think that other controllers are probably better suited for a laser but it would be nice to discover the capabilities of the eggbot which I suspect is just vector oriented.

Only true hackers understand the pleasure of doing something like this. Spending days reading and rewriting source code just to get one marginally acceptable result. What code be more fun than that?

It was like my hacking the Makerbot controller to run the laser. I knew that is was not something I would end up using, but I had to be the first to do it. It is amazing what you will learn doing things like this though.

Obviously a rotary would do a good job, but you pay for a lot of stiffness and precision that would not be needed. I have never been able to justify one for my router alone, but this does add a little justification.

I think I will stick to the original plan of making a decent sub $100 rotary for a laser and skip the Eggbot and 4th axis rotary table.

I have tried egg marking and cutting under my CO2 with the rotary. Didn't work well at all. The egg lit up like a Christmas tree and burned black.

Could you have been using too much power?

I don't know... just thinking out loud...

Well nothing happened at low power so I juiced it up. Perhaps my problem was using a white egg. I suppose it might do a brown egg as above, but I would definitely choose a different image.
