Quantum Delta

General discussion of 3D printers

I am going to try to finish the Quantum Delta this Thursday at Pumping Station One.

I changed the drive system from the Spectra cable to a 1/8" MXL belt. Both worked, but the belt is so much easier to install. Just for fun, I uploaded all the laser cut parts to Ponoko for a quote. It is about $51 for all parts.

Was this ever completed?

It looked like the hardware build was successful, I but I had to leave while you were tweaking the software.

Right now it is pretty much a weekly PS1 project. I take it to PS1 once a week and we work on it with a few regulars.

Last week's activities.

- Installed the actuator rods.
- Noticed a little binding at the outer edges that was limiting the usable radius of the printer.
- Unistalled the rods and added some spacers.
- Reinstalled the rods.
- Did some basic testing of the motion and software.

Tonight's plan.
- Setup the limit switches
- Print!

Stop by if you are in the area.

Hey Bart - would you mind sharing the STL's for your motor mounts? Those are really nice!

It Works!

We got the printer working last night. all we needed to do was tweak the firmware and setup the Z zero. It nailed its first print!

We even successfully printed upside down. It was flipped while printing.

Here are a couple videos.

I'll do a full blog post with all the source files over the weekend.

The more I look at this design, with the fixed hot-end, the more I admire it.

You could add 2 or 3 extruders without any strain on the effector platform, and no fiddling with bowden retraction issues.

Or you could even make a revolving turret type of thing with different types of extruders; i.e., 3mm filament, 1.75mm filament, chocolate frosting...

Perhaps, if it was a bit larger, you could squeeze the electronics in the space under the print bed when it does it's little dance at 0,0,0...

And an elliptical print bed...yeah, that's the ticket!

@DonaldJ was a big help with the QD. He was there all three nights and was head camera man.

Your suggestions probably apply to the next bot.

On the agenda for the this bot is a lazy susan style spool holder and a magnetically attached bed surface. It would be nice to be able to pop off the bed.

BTW: The source is now on Thingiverse and the blog post is done.

It occured to me that with the fixed hot end, you open up opportunities for experimenting with things like water cooled hot ends, or extruders that are normally too heavy to mount to a traditional printer.

I think a Delta bot is next on my to do list now.

It would be interesting to see one of these scaled up a little and set up with 3 extruders. It does open up some possibilities.

Printing upside down would be pretty cool with a way to feed the filament through the table top. It'd look like it's just magically building parts out of nothing. It'd be incredible to see in a shop window or a kiosk.

Someone mentioned that a print failure can create quite a mess in upside down mode, so I don't know how viable it is unattended. Your extruder might end up in a big block of plastic.

As @DonaldJ mentioned you could play with the geometry to make a non-circular work area delta. A long ellipse shape works for multiple extruders.
