Copy / Paste

A 3D printer without a 3D scanner is just a 3D printer.
So i've decided to move on to a full-blown replicator (without the capital R).

ORD Bot on the output, NextEngine on the input.
Anyone here have any experiences, tips or laments to share on 3D scanning?

Edit: Yes, some bits (embarrassingly) fell off the print. Including the tail tip.

I've been playing with a borrowed Microsoft Kinect, the software development has exploded over the past year. This is one of the ones I've tried: http://reconstructme.net/projects/reconstructmeqt/

Hah, cool, i need to try that out.
My kinect's been sitting in the drawer for a while now. Back when i bought it, the software was pretty limited. Multi-volume scanning was painful and the size of a single volume was pretty constricting.

I'm having buyers remorse now for not going the semi-DIY structured light way instead of a turn-key laser-based solution.
Then again, the opportunity was too good to pass up (got the NextEngine locally, barely used and with the two-axis turntable and ton of goodies for less than what just the scanner costs before the taxes and customs fees).

In case anyone was curious, this is what the mesh looks like:

The original toy's head is 19mm wide, sans horns and ears.

For comparison purposes:

Note the hands and wing tips on the angel and the right hand and racquet on the tennis player.

Was sorta surprising to see the texture (faux hair thing they etched into the original) survived the scanning and, more importantly, printing.
