Bearing spacers

Postby bdring » Fri May 27, 2011 6:08 pm

Ben's recent issue with the lock washer used as a bearing spacer got me looking for a better solution. While I don't think anyone else had a problem yet, it is probably not the most robust solution if he had trouble with it. It looks like a burr on the washer caused a little rubbing of the washer on the shield/seal on the bearing.

I decided to switch to a precision shim between the bearings. The The shim is 0.032" +/- 0,0015". It is made of heat treated steel and darn flat. I'll start shipping them with the kits right away and update the documentation soon.

This came out of some research I am doing for the dual bearing wheel that will be an option on the MakerSlide. Those wheel are going to need a very consistent spacer or binding might occur.
