CNC Foam cutter using makerslide?

Postby BrianS » Fri Apr 06, 2012 10:14 pm

Hi,

Just wondering has anyone used makerslides to build a CNC foam cutter? Seems to me that it would be a good use for it. Any ideas, suggestions or better yet plans around? Thanks in advance.

I am going to attempt to use my ORD Bot to CNC EVA foam once I get it the kit assembled and dialed in for 3D printing. I may have to follow it with a vacuum until I can make something for that because the debris would cause trouble if it gets on the rails and in the wheels.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I meant a hotwire cutter not a router or mill. But either type would be cool to hear about.

great idea... i haven't seen any body using the makerslide to do this... but i would think that the router plans would be the best to follow. How would you plan on cutting shapes out of the center of the foam?

Maybe this product would give you some ideas? http://rc-letmathe.de/product_info.php? ... d=1255...I suspect the hot wire will have to be held in a bow rather than spring loaded between the towers if you use maker slide. Also using drive belts makes things a bit easier..

I think a 2 axis hotwire cutter would be fairly simple to build with Makerslide. If you use the same methods as the ORD bot, using off the shelf belts and carraiges, and minimal custom parts, I would think the cost could be kept fairly low.
