DSP controller

Postby 62-scorch » Mon May 16, 2011 8:19 pm

Hi there,

I'm planning to buy the DSP controller and would like to know how this would be connected to the 2.x driver board - the controller card doens't seem to have a parallel port ? And could I use instead of the 2.x driver board any cnc controller board, for example this one ?

Thank you for your answers =)

Most of the drivers based on the Toshiba cheap on not very good. The motors will be noisy and often hot for the power you get.

With the DSP, you don't need any controller. The DSP is the controller.

What you need is:
1. The DSP
2. Two drives (for x and y)
3. Optional third drive (for z)

Everything can be wired directly from the DSP to the drives and the laser ps.

IF you want to us the new pololu driver on Bart's new interface board, you can simply wire up a parallel cable connector from the DSP outputs and just plug it in. In fact, Bart included the PWM input through the parallel cable specifically because I asked for it so we could make the DSP plug and play, just like the retina and going direct from Mach.

The controller you were looking at COULD work, but you will be disappointed in it. It is not set up for the speeds that tha DSP will they to fire at it.

As one with (probably) the most experience with the DSP, I strongly recommend you use individual drives or use the new interface board with pololu drives.

Originally I had in mind to buy 2 of these drivers, but the description says they're also based on the Toshiba chip, so they are crap as well ? If so, would this be a better choice ?

The leetro replacement is exactly what I use. It works great! I have had zero problems with them. I can also give you help with final wiring to the DSP and motors, if you need. Go with it! (I need to order one more for my z - think I will do that today!)
