Converted Z-axis to Belt Drive

Postby runninfarmer » Sun Feb 09, 2014 12:01 am

I mentioned in a previous thread about how I had problems with lead screws and was going to convert to belt drive. I have made the conversion and figured I'd post it in it's own thread. Here are some pics:

Here's a video of me testing it out: http://youtu.be/OvG_cZWBxVk

Once I get a new driver for the x-axis I'm hoping to start printing. I'm going to be trying out the micro extruder designed by ultibots that uses the smaller stepper motor.

Very nice! Are you going to post the stl files?

Thanks! Sure, here's the link to the stl and scad files on thingverse: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:245092

My motors were attached to aluminum angle so the brackets may need to be modified to fit mitsumi extrusion.

When I have time, I'd like to mash this up with Flurin's Z stepper motor base here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:43069 which should make this work with the misumi on most Hadrons. If someone wants to beat me to it, I won't get my feelings hurt ;) .

I've uploaded a version of the mashup you wanted to do. I kind of wanted to add another support that attaches perpendicularly, but this might suffice. Please let me know what you think. If it works, sorry I beat you to it!

I also noticed the motor might stick out a little farther on the typical ord bots so I've also uploaded extended idlers to compensate for any gantrys that stick out farther than mine.

That looks really nice, but what about if the belt stretches ???

There is probably a break in period with the belts, but I designed the motor brackets so that the belts can be tightened by sliding the motors down. Adjustments can also be made at the clamp, which doesn't take much time. Once I can start printing I will be able to test if they stretch much between and/or during prints.

I finally got my new Ramps driver and was able to do a a first print! I'm very happy with the first print. Still need to fine tune my steps/mm, but the layers looked really good. I got a little excited and tried to yank off my test cube while it was warm and deformed it, oops. Here are some pics:

I have now implemented a counter balance pulley system so I no longer have to worry about my bed crashing on shutdown! Uses 2 lbs worth of lead sinkers and some 30 lb test fishing line. I will update my thingiverse page. Here are some pics:
