What is this Big Green Cylinder Ugly thing?

Postby pinoynyc » Wed Apr 16, 2014 6:49 pm

Hi,

This may had been asked before, but I tried searching the forum and can't find an answer.
And I don't see it being used in the DIY lasers that you guys have (I could be wrong), but I have it in my K40 chinese laser.

See the green cylinder on the right? it's connected in series with co2 laser tube's ground. Is this a a resistor or a ballast? Must be important if the Chinese are using it. But I don't see it in the buildlog lasers.

Please enlighten me.

It looks a lot like a resistor to me.

yep, that's a giant wire-wound power resistor.

Mine started arcing and I had to replace it. It's a 50Kohm wire-wound resistor.

If you're looking for one, I replaced mine with this and it worked well: http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search/produc ... KU=1259521

Fred,

Very helpful information.
Question, I don't see it being use in the 2.x (I could be wrong), is this really required?
Or the tube will get burnt if I tried to get rid of it, since there won't be anything controlling the current. ?

I will be using a DSP (awc608) with a power supply from K40 that has TTL (i'll start with 40w tube for now).

And if it is required, what would be the equivalent resistor for 60w or 80w laser?

Thanks again.
