nema 17 vs 23 and controllers

Postby generalsocial » Sat Oct 15, 2011 5:37 am

I just went through my parts box and found some controllers and nema 17 and 23 motors.

Q1) The controller in the picture was purchased with some Nema 23 motors. It should work with the attached Nema 17 right? The motor is labelled at 2.5A so it's just a matter of selecting either 2.3 or 2.7A from the dip switches? Is this okay?

Q2) Is there a good reason to use the Nema 17 if you already have some Nema 23 motors lying around? Or is it just excess weight?

Q3) The Nema 17s I have 5mm shaft. I suppose that means I have to get 5mm timing pulleys. Does that mean I will not be able to find XL or MXL pulleys and need to switch to something else to use these motors?

Thanks in advance!

The controller will work fine, just select the proper current.

If you use nema 23 motors you may need to modify the plans a bit to get them to fit. Any additional weight will be offset by increased power and should be negligible regardless IMO.

Almost all timing pulleys are available for all reasonable shaft diameters. I'm pretty sure the nema 17 motors are also 5mm (I know for sure they metric) so there will be no problems.

If you are doing the buildlog build you need dual shafts on the y-axis and TBH steppers are cheap enough it might be worth buying the recommended set just for the convenience.

Thanks for the quick answer!

I'm kind of already off the rails on the build. I'm making a machine that's 46x25".

So I sort of have to play the whole thing by ear. But I think I'm getting through it okay.

Cool thats about the size of what i'm planning to build; 50" x 25" Maybe we should compare notes :)

Are you using MakerSlide ?

I'd love to compare notes.

I've got a lot of projects so I'm very slow at this point.

I have a 2nd laser project which is expected to be running in a day or so. I got one of those Red Sail lasers from China. You can see all my reports on laser stuff here: http://mambohead.com/category/cnc/cnc-laser-cnc/

Where are you with your project?

Yeah same here !

I'm just getting started, planning, early design, and gathering bits n pieces so Im sure you're way ahead of me there.
I'm trying to do some really advanced electronics to run the thing so i'm starting with that.
