Laser PSU Cable Frayed - Can I Splice it

Postby Reversity » Tue Oct 25, 2011 5:49 pm

It seems like a dumb question, but I am somewhat afraid of my laser PSU. I just noticed that the red cable that is attached to it is somewhat frayed.

Given the voltage, I'm a bit concerned about splicing it.

Any tips?

I'd just wrap a few layers of electrical tape over it myself. The wire is going to be stripped where you attach it to the tube anyways.

If you really want replace the wire just get something rated for the proper voltage (spark plug wire) and make sure the ends are well insulated (hot glue?).

Heat shrink is even better, especially the stuff with the goo on the inside.

We use silcone heatshrink tubing at work for our high voltage splices. The trick is to get all air out of the joint or corona could cause a premature breakdown of the insulation. I'll try to get the work instructions for such a splice.

I have used hot glue before with great success. By success I'm talking about a 125,000 volt 25mA power supply cable. Hot glue melted over the exposed conductor with a ground shield 5/8" away. It never popped through.

Crisis averted I thin. Cole Tech is shipping a replacement cable.

Will try hot glue and silicone wrap in the meantime.
