Only true hackers understand the pleasure of doing something like this. Spending days reading and rewriting source code just to get one marginally acceptable result. What code be more fun than that?
It was like my hacking the Makerbot controller to run the laser. I knew that is was not something I would end up using, but I had to be the first to do it. It is amazing what you will learn doing things like this though.
Obviously a rotary would do a good job, but you pay for a lot of stiffness and precision that would not be needed. I have never been able to justify one for my router alone, but this does add a little justification.
I think I will stick to the original plan of making a decent sub $100 rotary for a laser and skip the Eggbot and 4th axis rotary table.
