PEM Nuts Installation

Postby techsavvy34 » Sun Jun 22, 2014 6:30 am

I'm wondering how you install the pem nuts on the laser carriage and the z lift plates? Can it be done with hand tools or a bench vise?

I would go with bench vise, even better an arbor press if you have access to one.

make sure you do not crush the floating PEM. I used a smaller socket to press on the actual nut.

Are the PEM nuts really necessary with 1/8" 6061? Or is this just a way to avoid tapping?

I think the nuts are necessary. The idea is that they "float" in their housing. I think this is designed to eliminate possible binding by allowing the nuts to move a little bit.
As a previous poster suggests , a socket over the nut is needed to keep from crushing the housing. I used an arbor press, which probably gives a little more control than a vise, although a vise would probably work.

You surely want the PEM nuts.

First, you want at least 3 threads engagement. Second you don't want steel on aluminum contact (especially for the z axis). Third, you want the planar and angular tolerance relief as reeser mentioned.

I have installed this in my Windows laptop but now when I am trying to install it in my MacBook Pro, it is showing some error messages of the iTunes Error code 590624. Is it any fault in my device or error in the version of the software that I have downloaded.
